Nine American Airlines employees were among the 21 people arrested Tuesday as federal agents moved to shut down an alleged cocaine smuggling ring. Prosecutors say airline ground crew members in San Juan, Puerto Rico, helped ensure that up to 9,000 kilos of cocaine escaped detection on flights bound for the U.S. mainland. "The use of commercial aircraft to smuggle narcotics in and out of Puerto Rico ... creates a serious threat to our national security," said the U.S. attorney for Puerto Rico. An American Airlines spokesman said the company had assisted authorities in their investigation. "As a company, we hope that the actions of a few employees don't reflect negatively on the tens of thousands of ethical American Airlines employees who work hard to serve the public daily," American said in a statement.
