Android gains as rivals slip in smartphone market

The latest comScore report shows Google's Android operating system owned a 17% share of the U.S. smartphone market in the three-month period ending in July compared with a 12% share with the quarter ending in April; Research in Motion's BlackBerry dipped a couple of percentage points to 39.3%. The iPhone and Windows-based handsets also slipped as the number of smartphone users in the U.S. market grew by 11%. RIM has lost ground to Android in the business market, according to a published report.
