Batumi, Georgia, is undergoing a frenzied makeover

Batumi, Georgia, a resort town just a few miles from the Turkish border, was once decrepit with infrastructure issues and peeling paint. The city has been undergoing a massive transformation, however, giving face-lifts to the historic buildings in its Belle Epoque quarter, extending its oceanside walkway and adding casinos inspired by Monte Carlo. Air Batumi, which debuted this summer, is offering flights between the city and the Georgian capital of Tbilisi and plans to increase its routes.
