The Obama administration is seeking tougher oversight of America's oil and natural-gas transmission lines in the aftermath of last week's explosion in San Bruno, Calif., with officials saying regulators shouldn't simply accept companies' assurances that their equipment is in good working order. Safety advocates welcomed the move but said more specific plans were needed. "If this is a starting point, fine. If this is all the administration has to say, it is wholly inadequate," said Rick Kessler of the Pipeline Safety Trust.
