Illinois officials broke ground this week on what is likely to be the country's first LEED Platinum certified affordable-housing development. Geared toward rural residents making less than $41,000 a year, the multimillion-dollar development will include 32 three-bedroom single-family homes that will rent to qualified people for $590 a month. Rooftop solar panels and wind turbines throughout the community are expected to mean no monthly utility bills for residents and even power the streetlights. The first homes will be ready for rent this year.
