Cost of Ohio River Olmsted Dam project reaches $3.1B

Construction costs for the Olmsted Locks and Dam project on the Ohio River in Olmsted, Ill., have increased to $3.1 billion. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch said the project has been "plagued by cost overruns, delays and engineering challenges stemming largely from the Corps' stubborn insistence on an innovative construction method ["in-the-wet"] that met its match in the unruly Ohio River." Also blamed are Congress' unwillingness to provide more funding for the project in its early stages; and the Inland Waterways Users Board's failure to address the project's increasing costs.
