DOL warns employers about payments for health insurance

The U.S. Labor Department's Employee Benefits Security Administration issued a technical release warning employers to give the matter careful thought before issuing workers checks to buy health coverage from insurance exchanges. Making fixed payments to workers could conflict with a provision of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act taking effect next year that prohibits employer-paid plans from imposing annual or lifetime benefits limits, the release said.
