Freight railroads serve integral role in history, economy of U.S. Northwest

Freight railroads such as BNSF, Kansas City Southern and Union Pacific play a valuable role in the economic development of the U.S. Northwest, and they are deeply involved with the region's history, writes Jon Talton. For instance, 23 railroads conduct operations in Washington state, according to the Association of American Railroads. "The railroad is not just still here, it's growing," said BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas.
