Opinion: Airline industry supports environment

The airline industry may well be one of the environment's strongest advocates, despite not often receiving credit for its ongoing efforts and progress. Nancy Young, Airlines for America Vice President of Environmental Affairs, pointed out the following at a recent conference: "The poster child for environmental action has to be in the area of climate change. US airlines have improved their fuel efficiency by 120 percent between 1978 and 2012, saving 3.4 billion metric tons of CO2, roughly equivalent to taking 22 million cars off the road each of those years. As a result, US airlines account for only 2 percent of the nation's inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, yet they drive more than 5 percent of the nation’s GDP."
