School counselors take on more students, duties amid budget cuts

Cash-strapped school districts in recent years have cut counselor positions, leading to counselor-to-student ratios that exceed recommended guidelines. Art Terrazas, of the American Counseling Association, said counselors are accepting additional duties traditionally done by other school staff, such as event coordination, and leaving less time for direct counseling for college assistance or crisis intervention.
