Growing out of a slump

Britt Menzies turned her art hobby into a thriving clothing business, only to watch it collapse when parents decided that $30 was too much to spend for a T-shirt with a cute cartoon character. Rather than let the brand die, Menzies dug deep into her pockets and created a line of books and plush toys based on her characters. With Nordstrom on board for the holidays, Menzies is glad the recession forced her into "looking at the brand from a big-picture standpoint."
