Model emerges from Tenn. to evaluate teachers of untested subjects

An alternative teacher-evaluation measure -- in which students' portfolios are used to gauge the effectiveness of teachers of subjects not covered by standardized tests -- is drawing praise nationwide, including from U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan. The Tennessee Fine Arts Growth Measures System has expanded to North Carolina to evaluate the effectiveness of teachers in the arts. A similar model would evaluate teachers of world languages, health and physical education, besides Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate teachers.
