Nielsen: Viewers trust word of mouth recommendations, TV ads

Eighty-four percent of people worldwide value recommendations from family and friends above all other forms of marketing, according to a Nielsen survey. But the same group trusted information gleaned from brand websites slightly more than online customer reviews and opinions. Trust in TV advertising rose from 56% in 2007 to 62%, while newspaper ads slipped.
