Innovative roof redesign helps stadium land award

The unique roof structure of the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban, South Africa, helped it win the Southern African Institute of Steel Construction's 2009 Steel Awards competition. Five structural elements comprise the roof structure: an 1,100-foot steel arch that is almost 350 feet high, supporting cables, a membrane roof and a steel compression ring.
