Port authority examines alternatives for Bayonne Bridge

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey commissioned a study by the Army Corps of Engineers on the Bayonne Bridge. The study recommended jacking up the 78-year-old bridge to 215 feet from its current clearance of 151 to 156 feet, or building a new bridge with higher clearance. The bridge over the Kill van Kull waterway may pose an obstacle to large commercial ships once the Panama Canal is expanded in 2015.
