Risk of back surgery complications rises with age, illness

An analysis of the Veterans Health Administration's National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database found that the odds of developing complications from lumbar stenosis surgery were higher past age 50 and when patients had pre-existing health problems. The complications reported most often included sepsis, pneumonia and respiratory or cardiac failure, according to the study published in the journal Spine.
