Surgical volume, mortality rates may predict readmission risk

Hospitals that performed more surgical procedures or had lower surgery mortality rates had fewer 30-day readmissions than other hospitals, according to an analysis of Medicare data. Researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that strict adherence to surgical process measures had only a small impact on readmission rates.
