Governor signs Los Angeles schools takeover bill

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday signed a controversial bill that, effective Jan. 1, will give Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa substantial control over district schools and direct responsibility over three high schools and their feeder schools. At the signing ceremony, Villaraigosa urged school board members to quit fighting the bill, but district officials say they still plan to file a legal challenge.
