Smiths Medical, university redesign device to treat lung disease

Smiths Medical International has partnered with University College London to modify a breathing apparatus -- originally meant for mountain climbers -- into a medical device for treating patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The portable device, which is designed to reprocess exhaled oxygen, enables COPD patients to breathe with more ease and minimize their oxygen dependence, a company official said.
