Australian leader is urged to increase teacher pay

In Victoria, Australia, incoming Premier Ted Baillieu is being urged to raise teacher pay to attract and retain quality teachers and improve education. Baillieu once announced his intention to make Victoria's teachers the highest paid in the country, but he later backed off that pledge. "A commitment to higher pay for teachers can be an important contribution to improving teacher quality, generally recognised as the most important driver of education outcomes," a brief from the Treasury department states.
