Medicare to add "spending per beneficiary" as quality measure

Medicare in 2014 will begin using spending per beneficiary for an episode of care as a quality measure included in how it calculates hospital reimbursement. Hospital groups objected to the measure, but Dr. Jeffrey DiLisi of the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., called it a fair metric that allows hospitals to fully look at patient discharge and transition of care.
