Plug-in makes smartphone into a free-range microscope that can see viruses

Aydogan Ozcan, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, has created a lightweight microscope that attaches to a smartphone and is powerful enough to detect bacteria and viruses using the smartphone's imaging processor. The new technology "could enable the practice of nanotechnology and biomedical testing in field settings and even in remote and resource-limited environments," Ozcan said.
