ACG note:

09/20/2011

In an April 2010 letter to the FDA, the College highlighted concerns it sees with repeated CT exposures to a healthy patient when used for CRC screening, and when considered in the context of a patient's personal history of exposure to ionizing radiation, may also lead to an increase in radiation-induced cancers. It is also worth noting that the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have found that CT Colonography, or virtual colonoscopy, for screening is not as effective in terms of sensitivity of the test or from a cost perspective than other modes of screening, including complete colonoscopy and does not cover it for that purpose.
