Proposed E-Verify mandate gains interest-group opposition

A coalition of national and regional groups is opposing a proposed federal bill to make E-Verify mandatory for businesses, saying the measure could cause job losses and spur identity theft. The bill's author, Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, said the bill will only affect illegal workers. The bill is awaiting committee action in the House.
