Report calls for increased focus on civics in schools

Schools need to do more to teach students about American democracy and civics, according to a new report co-authored by several groups, including the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools for which former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor is the co-chair. "Knowledge of our system of governance and our rights and responsibilities as citizens is not passed along through the gene pool," write Justice O'Connor and Lee Hamilton -- co-chair of the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools and a former U.S. representative of Indiana -- as part of a message included in the report.
