Army to downsize active-duty force sooner than expected

The Army is accelerating plans to reduce the number of active-duty troops, according to Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond Odierno, dropping to 490,000 in 2015 instead of 2017. "The Army will strive to retain its most talented soldiers but will be forced to separate large numbers" of high-quality, experienced combat veterans, he said.
