Experts: Choose incentives carefully under health reform rules

Companies should create a culture of health and a system of intrinsic rewards for wellness programs under new health reform rules to avoid going overboard in paying incentives, said Don Powell, CEO of the American Institute for Preventive Medicine. FirstEnergy in Akron, Ohio, recently switched its incentive format from penalizing workers who smoke to rewarding healthy habits, and officials said it appears to be improving employee engagement.
