Plastic surgeon develops technique to restore sensation in breast reconstruction

Plastic surgeon Aldona Spiegel is working on a technique that restores sensation after post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. The technique takes about 15 minutes and involves connecting a nerve in the same location where blood vessels are reattached in microsurgical procedures. Sensation may not return for eight months, and it does not return to pre-surgery levels, Spiegel says.
