Japanese "community schools" closely bound to local culture

In 25 Kyoto schools, management councils with 75 community and parent representatives develop the curriculum and create hands-on learning experiences for students. At Gosho-Minami Elementary school this year, students will study composition with an award-winning writer, discuss global warning with a local environmental group and learn "makie," a gold-lacquer craft, with city artists.
