World's river deltas are sinking and it's man's fault, study finds

A study by an international research team found human activity is causing 24 of the world's 33 major river deltas to sink, putting about 500 million people at serious risk of flooding. Man-made structures such as reservoirs, dams, channels and levees prevent river sediments to flow into the oceans, while groundwater and natural gas extraction speed up compression of floodplain sediment, causing the deltas to subside, the researchers said.
