Balanced budget is within reach if tax cuts expire, analysts say

Allowing all Bush-era tax cuts to expire on schedule would have a good chance of bringing the U.S. government's borrowing under control and moving the nation toward a balanced budget, government and private analysts said. Neither political party supports that approach, with President Barack Obama calling for an extension for households with an annual income of less than $250,000 and Republicans proposing that all income groups keep their tax breaks. Advocates of a balanced budget said both parties are being "disingenuous" about the tax policy they back.
