Unlikely alliance pushes Congress to act on food safety bill

Interest groups including corporate lobbyists, business trade groups and consumer safety advocates combined their efforts this week in a push to convince Congress to approve a bill that would strengthen the FDA's powers to protect the U.S. food supply. Outbreaks of salmonella and other severe, foodborne illnesses in recent years have convinced food companies that stricter inspection rules are needed, the Wall Street Journal reports.
