San Francisco Bay Bridge project mired in delays, overruns

The new span of the San Francisco Bay Bridge, originally slated to cost $1.3 billion to build, now has a budget of about $5.1 billion and won't be finished until at least 2011. Lawmakers are sparring over who is at fault for the delays and overruns, and experts say the situation highlights the desperate state of many other U.S. bridges, more than 150,000 of which need to be overhauled, according to one analysis.
