Editorial: Peters making right moves on airline inspections

Transportation Secretary Mary Peters has outlined an "encouraging" series of steps to ensure better airline inspections, according to an editorial in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Accused of fostering "a culture whereby air carriers were considered the primary customer of its oversight mission," the FAA must learn that "the only customer that matters in the end is the flying public," Peters said. To that end, she has ordered audits of inspection offices beginning Sept. 30, 2009, as well as nationwide training to "ensure the same consistent and effective safety practices are followed whether in Dallas, Detroit or Denver."
