"Star" teacher turned class around

Illinois teacher Veronica Herrera started the 2007-2008 school year almost in tears because her third-grade students were still struggling with basic reading skills. But by the end of the year, every one of her students passed standardized reading tests, netting Herrera recognition as one of 50 recipients of a U.S. Department of Education American Star of Teaching award.
