Oneworld, Star and SkyTeam -- the trio of major global airline alliances -- are seen as a threat to competition in the Northern Hemisphere, but the alliances have struggled to gain a considerable presence in the Southern Hemisphere. The situation has analysts pondering whether the alliances will be forced to play a smaller role next to local carriers in some regions, particularly Latin America.
