Bar codes could be used to identify financial instruments

GS1 US, the group that administers the Universal Product Code, and Financial InterGroup Holdings, a consultancy, are working together to bring bar codes to the financial-services industry. The organizations are studying ways to use the UPC system to identify financial instruments. "A global identification system would reduce systemic risk in the financial system's interconnected supply chain," said Allan Grody, president of Financial InterGroup. "Additional benefits would be lower capital costs and processing efficiencies which would reduce middle- and back-office costs and keep trading and infrastructure fees low."
