How a checklist can help improve reading interventions

Reading teacher Robert Ruth developed a checklist for teaching decoding skills to students who struggle with reading. Inspired by a technique used in hospital intensive care units, the checklist was used last year in Ruth's school, enabling reading tutors and teachers to assess student proficiency in such skills without relying on the memory and judgment of individual educators. The use of the checklist led to significant improvements in reading proficiency and motivation among the students, Ruth said.
