Recession fears persist despite drop in U.S. jobless claims

Initial claims for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by 9,000, to 423,000, last week. The improvement wasn't enough to dispel concerns that the U.S. is slipping into a recession. Except for one week in August, first-time claims have remained above 400,000 since early April.
