Engineering course puts students through a virtual internship

Virtual companies are posing engineering problems for first-year students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as the school offers a taste of what internships are like in a bid to spark and retain the interest of young minds. "From a research point of view, this is what a [massive open online course] should be: not just videotapes of lectures made available for free online but a chance for students to learn to think about real problems in creative ways, collaboratively, online and with real mentoring," said David Williamson Shaffer, a professor of learning science.
