Holcim subbing waste materials for coal in Asian cement kilns

Holcim CEO Bernard Fontana says the company has started replacing coal it burns in its cement kilns in Asia with waste materials, including "toxic baby dolls, contraband cigarettes and old sunglasses." As cement makers work to slash energy costs, "[b]urning waste may make some cement plants in Asia as energy efficient as in Europe, helping Holcim to free up cash and compete with rivals," writes Patrick Winters.
