Germany Chancellor Angela Merkel has won a third term by a wide margin. The election substantially increased the strength of Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union party and its sister party, the Christian Social Union, in parliament. It was the best showing for a conservative party since voters gave Chancellor Helmut Kohl a third term in 1990. Merkel is expected to attempt to form a coalition with the centre-left Social Democratic Party. In her final campaign appearance before the election, Merkel defended the euro and said its stabilisation is vital for Germany.
