Merkel scores decisive victory in German election

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has won a third term by a wide margin. The election substantially increased the strength of Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union party and its sister party, the Christian Social Union, in parliament. It was the best showing for a conservative party since voters gave Chancellor Helmut Kohl a third term in 1990. Merkel is expected to attempt to form a coalition with the center-left Social Democratic Party.
