A partnership in Iowa between the local chapters of the United Way and Big Brothers Big Sisters -- called Every Classroom Counts -- is matching mentors with more than 200 students, some as early as first grade. The mentors, who spend 30 minutes of one-on-one time every week with students, help with everything from homework to problems at home. The mentor of one sixth-grade student is a local high-school principal.
