Thousands of California schools vulnerable to earthquakes

Nearly 8,000 schools in California are prone to collapse during a major earthquake, engineers say. For example, a three-story school in the West Contra Costa Unified School District is 1,000 yards from the Hayward fault and lacks a basic seismic safety structure. However, officials note that the school does not qualify for state retrofit funds.
