Court: USDA fails to assess risks of Monsanto's biotech sugar beets

A federal U.S. court ruled that the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service failed to make an environmental-impact statement about Monsanto's biotech sugar beets prior to the deregulation of the crop. The court ordered the agency to assess the environmental and economic risks of the crop and scheduled a meeting in October to discuss other solutions. "The decision was based on procedure and had nothing to do with questioning the safety or efficacy of Roundup Ready sugar beets," said Garrett Kasper, a spokesman for Monsanto.
