How do you fix the problems with standardized testing?

Author and testing expert Todd Farley tells Washington Post education columnist Jay Mathews that standardized tests are ineffective and "ridiculous." He suggests that the system of grading the exams -- and even the tests themselves -- be changed and modeled after Washington state tests used for subjects considered to be secondary for students. Those classroom-based assessments are written and scored by the state's teachers in collaboration with a testing company.
