Study: Prostate biopsies increase hospitalization rates for men

A study in the Journal of Urology reported a hospitalization rate of 6.9% among men aged 65 and older who underwent prostate biopsy 30 days earlier, higher than the 2.9% rate in patients who didn't receive the test. Although prostate biopsy is important for prostate cancer diagnosis, men should be aware of potential risks, said senior investigator Edward Schaeffer, who helped analyze 150,000 Medicare patient records from 1991 to 2007.
