Turkey's Izmit Bay Bridge to be made earthquake-resistant

Japan-based Cowi has been chosen to design a suspension bridge connecting the cities of Izmir and Istanbul in Turkey. It will be the world's fourth-longest suspension bridge when finished. The bridge will be made earthquake-resistant by having its pylons built on a concrete foundation on a broad gravel bed so "the pylons can slide in the event of a major earthquake."
