Vouchers are gaining support across party lines

While President Barack Obama does not support school vouchers, several Democratic politicians are joining Republicans in support of some variation of voucher programs. Some lawmakers say they want to give children an opportunity to leave failing schools to attend higher-performing private schools, while other lawmakers say they want to limit use of the vouchers to low-income students or children in special-education programs. Many children "by law are locked into schools that fail their genius," said Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker, a Democrat.
